BBIA Policy: Transportation

With new communities being built in South Nepean at the fastest rate in the City of Ottawa and the impending move of 4,000 employees to the RCMP's new headquarters on Merivale Road, transportation issues are key to the success of business in the Barrhaven area.

BACKGROUND

STRANDHERD-ARMSTRONG BRIDGE

The design for the critical missing link connecting Barrhaven to the rest of Ottawa has finally been approved, but construction may not begin until 2011. The bridge is key to the development of the South Merivale Business Park and to the development of Barrhaven as a sustainable community.

ROAD CONSTRUCTION

Current Road Construction

Strandherd Drive Widening
Widening Strandherd Drive from Crestway to Riocan, a huge bonus for Barrhaven businesses, was completed in the summer of 2008. The extension of Strandherd Drive to Prince of Wales Drive will coincide with the closure of Woodroffe Avenue at Prince of Wales Drive and will also include the widening of Prince of Wales Drive from Woodroffe Avenue to Barnstone Drive. Construction is due to be completed this year. Widening Strandherd Drive from Fallowfield to Greenbank is not on the books yet.

Greenbank Road Widening

Widening Greenbank to four lanes from Malvern to Cambrian is included in the budget forecast for 2011-2016 as a $5 million project. However, widening Greenbank from Hunt Club to Malvern or from Cambrian to Prince of Wales isn't even on the radar yet.

Prince of Wales Widening

The Environmental Study for widening Prince of Wales from Fisher to Woodroffe is underway. City Council approved this project in May, 2007.

Longfields Drive Extension

Extension to connect Woodroffe Ave. to Bill Letham Drive and alleviate traffic to the RCMP headquarters at South Merivale Business Park was opened this year.
